As long as you’re writing about what’s going on in the world today — and, one way or another, we all are — everything is timely. So here’s another problem with “timely”: Whether intended as an endorsement or a censure, the word can often elicit the opposite effect. Utopia just isn’t worth the pain. This is entertainment, and any timeliness wasn’t invited by its creators — it was thrust upon the show by circumstance. When you watch a show or film that feels particularly relevant to headline news, it’s almost instinctual to throw the word “timely” into your own headline. The rest of the crew are similarly flimsy, even if the performers (notably Desmin Borges and Cory Michael Smith) manage to elevate them above sketches.

In fairness to the production team, they won’t have to worry too much about these comparisons. Enter “Utopia,” Amazon Prime Video’s new original series that’s impossible to discuss without mentioning its timely premise. Huh, it’s almost like the conversation should’ve been focused elsewhere. But while the original Utopia’s taut structure kept you on the edge of your seat, the more languid pace of this follow-up can be disappointing. Among them there’s conspiracy theorist Wilson Wilson, nice girl-next-door-with-a-secret Becky, milquetoast office worker Ian, catfisher Grant (who pretends to be a rich adult, instead of the pre-teen he is) and – new to the US version – Sam, an activist and the group’s leader. When your mindset is dominated by a common concern, all roads lead to the same spot. Also at FringeCon, Christopher Denham’s Arby—a raisin-scarfing little boy in a man’s body, who possesses all the diabolical eccentricity of a Coen Bros. villain—and an underling stalk the hotel halls on a mission to procure the comic at any cost, dispassionately murdering anyone who might possibly stand in their way. Starting with Gillian Flynn's Amazon series "Utopia," why we need to stop describing television as "timely." “Timely,” on its own, doesn’t really tell us anything qualitative, and even as a context clue, the word has been hollowed out by misuse. The anthropomorphic bunny forces her father to invent terrifying new viruses to unleash upon the human race. National news covers the viral outbreak 24/7. To call it timely would be too generous and too thoughtless. Our best wishes for a productive day. Time (and interviews) will tell what kind of messaging was intended, if any at all, but this kind of narrative mismanagement isn’t restricted to the show’s more delicate thematic content.

Its credulous attitude toward conspiracy theories doesn’t feel so exhilarating in the QAnon era. Soon, they’re on the run from a mysterious organisation who’ll murder anyone to get their hands on the comic, and have to decipher its secrets to work out what their foes are planning – which is when they run into the real-life version of the comic’s protagonist, Jessica Hyde…. Amateur conspiracy theorists have plenty to chew on (arguably too much by Episode 7), and the unsettling trail of breadcrumbs is dispersed well enough to keep hardened viewers engaged. A show about dragons and warfare and full frontal nudity set in a made-up fantasy land? Generally speaking the action is slow and almost baggy, with events from the first episode of the original series not occurring until around halfway through the second of this reboot, and the sharp directorial choices and bright colours from Kelly’s version replaced by more bland visual storytelling. Want something else to watch? A drama about the systematic oppression of women? There are problems and pluses that exist no matter when someone watches — credit to the Chicago backdrop for helping distinguish the series’ overall look — and, ultimately, it’s just another spooky story in need of refinement. ‘Soul’ Aims for Oscar Glory as Disney Shifts to Streaming, but Not All Films Deserve the Same Release, How Closed Theaters, Drive-In Movies, and Netflix Supremacy Are Shaping Oscar Season, ‘Chicago 7’ Vs. the World: How Aaron Sorkin’s Awards-Friendly Epic Jolted a Strange Awards Season, Introducing ‘Deep Dive’: Damon Lindelof and His Team Go Behind the Scenes of ‘Watchmen’, ‘Succession’: How Editing Helps Every Dinner Scene Come to Life — Deep Dive, Becoming Hooded Justice: The ‘Watchmen’ Craft Team Analyzes the Emotional, Pivotal Scene – Deep Dive, 40 Must-See New Movies to See This Fall Season, The Best Movies Eligible for the 2021 Oscars Right Now, Jessie Buckley Won’t Explain ‘Ending Things,’ but She Will Reveal What Terrified Her Most. The body count of the premiere alone is staggering; Flynn introduces dozens of colorful oddballs only to pick them off, never skimping on blood or gore.
